"Shopping" for my garden

So after some research, I've decided to go with one Square Foot Garden box, as well as several containers, as I have them. A couple questions for my gardening friends:

1. Where do you go to find wood or plastic that people don't want, for use as SFG materials? I'm willing to buy new lumber, but it'd be great to start from a place of recycling instead.

2. Anyone have extra compost they're looking to get rid of?

We ended buying untreated lumber for ours because it proved sufficiently challenging to find scrap wood that was definitely untreated and otherwise not full of bad stuff.

How many boxes did you start with? I'm thinking of just doing one to start.

I'd say go with whatever you're comfortable with. In my case, it's somewhat complicated but basically, I used the space I had which ended up turning into 2 4'x7' raised beds, plus I had a number of containers. But, y'know, when I do something I kinda overdo it. :)
