Is there a way to reply to screened comments without unscreening them first and then having them all unscreened and stuff during those few seconds before you go back afterward and screen them again???

If you first temporarily make the whole post private, you can then unscreen-->reply-->rescreen and no one will be able to see any of it. Then once you rescreen what you want to rescreen, you can then make the post public or filtered again without ever having revealed the screened content.

That's a jury rigged way around it, but I don't know of another way.

Will that get around the comment notification email if someone's tracking a post?

Nope, I think trackers gets notifications. Really, the way to do it is to reply by direct messaging, not through a comment.

Brilliant! And that *should* keep trackers from receiving notifications, too, but in any case, it's simple enough to test with some help or a spare account.

I think most people don't realize that when they reply to a screened comment, anyone tracking sees the original comment and who posted it. (I've seen folks claim otherwise, but I've tested it.)

ETA: Though now that I think about it, it might prevent the person you're replying to from receiving the notification as well..
