Hello, Internets,

So, I use flickr, but only casually, and I've just discovered the limits of a free account. It tells me that $24.95 will get me a year of storage of unlimited stuff, which is nice; I'm looking to back up my photos somewhere, and have an easy way of sharing them with people.

My one thought about going with Picasa instead is that I have a Google phone, and when I take pictures, one of the easy sharing options is to post it to Picasa. This, needless to say, is far more convenient than emailing it to myself, then uploading it to Flickr.

However, I also note that while Picasa is free, the storage space allowable is only 1 gig. I have over 7 gigs in the 2006 folder of my iPhoto library.

Thoughts, Internets?

i haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate picasa's user interface. a lot. meaning i'm much less likely to go look at photos people post there. i've been very happy with what i get for my $25/yr at flickr, and i like the social media aspects of being able to see new photos from my contacts, and the stats stuff i get on who's viewing my pictures also makes me happy.

my 2 cents :)

And mine. Picasa is a PITA IME.

YMMV.

There's a free flickr upload tool in the android market.

I've never used Picasa's software interface, because you have to download it. I've been sitting at around 190 pictures for a few years on Flickr, but I suspect I'd use it if I had a paid account. As with Coraline, I like that Flickr has a social media thing going - I have a lot of friends in real life that use it, so I get to see their pictures when they upload.

Here's another vote for the value of Flickr. I've just topped the 30,000 mark, so for me $25/year seems cheap.

When I looked at Picasa I found the terms of service intolerable. While I normally don't read such things, I occasionally post photos that I think have some artistic merit, and while I don't have any immediate plans to commercialize them, I don't want to give away my copyrights, either.

As I recall, Picasa's terms of service basically amounted to "we own anything you post." Flickr was unobjectionable (I think they reserve the right to use their photos to promote themselves. I'm okay with giving them that license).

The disclaimer is that I looked into this over a year ago, so 1) the terms may have changed, or 2) my recollection may be wrong.

If you use Pixelpipe on Android, it'll post to twitter, Facebook, Flickr and anywhere else you want to post it, including a Wordpress blog. I've been using it for a while, and LOVE it.
