Hi, LJ,

I want to get some of those seven-day candles - they come in many colors, in glass jars. In particular, I'd like to have some green ones with no saints or prayers printed on them. Something like this:

I can order them online in several places, but the shipping costs get prohibitive. I figure I can find them in Latin grocery stores, but I live in Whitelandia. Does anyone have advice before I just go around trying every Latin grocer I can find listed near me?

Church supply shop. Mostly they get red and clear ones, but usually will order other colors if you buy by the case and don't look too Pagan. These folks appear to be in your part of the world.

Where do I find seven-day candles?

They sell those candles in the grocery stores in Austin. I take them for granted. I know that doesn't solve your problem but is an interesting note on culture and geography!

We can get seven-days in the store in Kansas City, too, but they are usually either clear-glass "emergency candles" or the sort with the saints printed on them. You can peel the saints off of them, because they're usually on a shrink-wrap label, but usually those are clear glass shells, too.

I've seen them in the "ethnic" or "international foods" section at grocery stores where [livejournal.com profile] dietrich and I live too.

There's a church supply shop in Downtown Crossing, and if that doesn't work out then Tropical in Roxbury is bound to have them.

Thanks. And hey, you. I have emailing you on my to-do list, for sure. It's been ages.

You going to the thing on Friday? :)

Try Johnnie's Foodmaster at the corner of Broadway and Rt. 16 in Somerville. They used to have a lot of them, but can't recall whether they had green--it's been years.

There's also the San Miguel botanica in JP, a few blocks further down towards the Arboretum from Harvest Food Co-op.

THat's just what I was going to say, the foodmaster thing. This isn't so much whitelandia as segregation-landia. White people and people of color aren't accustomed to shopping in the same stores.

Most Stop & Shops I've been to have them too. Definitely the one on 28 near the intersection of 38. I couldn't swear to it, but based on their food selection, I'd also try the Porter Shaws.

Spanish food section, Death Star.

Possibly also at the Foodmaster in Arlington.

Ditto on both of these. I have found them at the Star near my house in the last six months (ie, last time I checked).

There are basic colors in most supermarkets. I also know many new age, magic type shops also sell them.

If I am remembering my walks down the Goya aisle correctly, the Market Basket near Union Square had seven-day candles (and sawdust everywhere on the floor for ambiance!) but I couldn't say what colors I'd seen sitting next to the saints. Still, it may be worth an excursion out if you live close enough to a Market Basket location in your section of Whitelandia.

Where have you looked already?

Mainly online, but also at a couple of supermarkets...at the moment, I can't recall which ones, but I think the Porter Star was one of them.

I know what you mean about segregation-landia, but also recall that I live in Arlington. Which is reasonably diverse, but doesn't seem nearly so as neighboring Somerville and Cambridge.

I thought you were only just over the line. The projects on the corner of 16 are literally across the street from East Arlington. But, then again, I don't actually know where you live. I'd try the Foodmaster next. Also just across the street from Arlington.

Oh, no. I used to live right there, across from the Foodmaster, practically, but still in Somerville. Now I live a ten minute walk down Pleasant Street toward Belmont from Arlington Center, near Jason Street where some of the fanciest, oldest houses in Arlington hang out. It's beautiful, but yeah: it's amazing the difference a mile or so can make.

Huh. I actually usually get my seven-day votives at the Porter Shaw's (formerly Star). They generally have plain white (which go quickly), then green, yellow, and red, then a lot of saint-y ones.

I get mine at the Shaw's in Porter Sq. Not sure if they carry green or not.

Doh! Too bad you don't live here - every largeish drug store carries a supply of Santeria candles (if they realize they're Santeria candles, I don't know). Besides that, I've brokered a deal with the local botanica to get them in 1 dozen quantities for cheap - about $1 a candle, as opposed to $3.50 per candle.

If you want to take trip, JP has a good shop I've used before.
