Hi, friends list,

Do you have an online weather service that you like? I have weather.com bookmarked in my toolbar to show me weather in my town, but the site is rife with aggravating pop-up-like things and dancing robots. It'd be nice to have something a bit simpler and well, maybe cooler.

Aw, sweet. That's perfect - loads instantly and no clutter.

That's what I use.

That's the one I use, too — I've got it bookmarked to go straight to the forecast for my home ZIP code.

Ironically...

Yahoo. It's at my fingertips every hour of every day, and it's pretty spare and uncluttered (unlike some of their other services).

Wunderground's certainly my default choice, too.

I have to say - this one (http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?CityName=Somerville&state=MA&site=BOX&textField1=42.3903&textField2=-71.1018) that [livejournal.com profile] entrope linked me to loads faster and has no ads. I likes.

Exactly. I got frustrated with weather.com several years ago, for the same reasons as you, and cee pointed me at wunderground, and I was, like "gah, it's not much better with the ads'nsuch, is it?" At which point the lightbulb (or LED nowadays) went off overhead and it occurred to me that the taxpayer-supported national weather service MUST have a website of their own. Lo and behold, instant satisfaction and I've been spreading the good news ever since.

It even makes me a teensy bit less annoyed to be paying those stupid taxes.

Do people not notice that all of the commercial weather services and news bureaus get all of their raw information and forecasts from the NWS in the first place? It's hard to see exactly what value they add, other than flashier graphics sometimes. There is even information on the NWS site that you have to PAY for on other sites.

Well, one of the cool things about wunderground is that it isn't just government data. They integrate data from amateur weather stations all over the world. That's why it's the weather underground, you see.

Not that it makes a whole lot of difference day to day.

Donno which version of Mac you're running but I Dashboard came installed with my OSX. One of the options you can put there is the weather so right now I'm just one press of F12 from a completely clutter free, no ads 7-day report.

Although who am I to argue with using your tax dollars? The gov site has some nifty info, like radar and alerts.

I've been using Weather Underground since long before weather.com existed. wunderground grew out of a finger-based service from before the web. They have a no-ads subscription for $5/year (yes, that's not a typo) and I think they definitely deserve the money :) They also have a convenient "mobile" version of the site designed for cell phone browsers at http://mobile.wunderground.com/ which is almost Google-level clean and simple.

Dancing robots? I am so there!

When I use weather.com, I actually find myself having difficulty locating the forecast.

Generally, I go here. Sadly, they are totally devoid of dancing robots. or any robots for that matter.

I am going to have robots dancing to techno music in my brain for the remainder of the day. Now *that's* entertainment!
