Hi, fab friends list,

I'm looking for a place to crash in Manhattan on the night of Nov. 19. The venue I'll be going to is the Society of Illustrators, at 128 East 63rd Street.

I'm searching hotels on Hotwire, and it gives me only neighborhoods until I book. What neighborhood would you say that address is in?

There is no way not to end the previous sentence with a preposition. Dammit.

(Well, there is, but I'm impatient right now.)

Looks like Upper East Side to me - http://www.nycvisit.com/content/index.cfm?pagePkey=429

(63rd and Lexington)

I would say that area is just Midtown, but if you go according to Hotwire (there's a "see larger map" option on Hotwire that'll show you more detail on the neighborhoods), "Midtown East" or "Central Park Area" would work. You could also stay in "Midtown Central", which is just south of the park, and still close enough to where you're going.

If it comes down to it, you are welcome to my extra futon.

(Btw, then we'd get to hang out for a moment which would be awesome, of course.)

But I'd suggest looks on the Upper West Side, instead of the UES. I think On The Ave on 77th, might be a good idea...

Thanks! I think I figured things out. But would you mind extending this invitation for Sunday night, the 18th? [livejournal.com profile] imlad and I are going to come down for the weekend and he's going to go back on Sunday. His parents aren't so much with the speaking English, so staying with them without him can get a little awkward. And anyway, I'd like to see you. Thoughts?

You know, there's nothing ungrammatical about ending a sentence with a preposition. To be exact, it conforms to the rules of descriptive syntax. Prescriptive syntax tends to mostly be a way of making the people in power impose arbitrary rules on those without and feeling superior to them when those without also lack the resources to get "properly" educated. So by ending a sentence with a preposition, you are sticking it to The Man. Just sayin'

For that neighborhood, anything in Upper East Side or Midtown East will be pretty close. If you want to go further afield, going down to Murray Hill or across to the Upper West Side or Midtown West will still be an easy commute.

According to google the closest hotels to that address are:
The Lowell Hotel
Affinia Gardens
1871 House
Roger Smith Hotel

But basically for ease of commute (not sure how you are getting into "the City") you want to select a hotel anywhere on the Lexington Avenue line (4,5,6) which is where your event is located. I would also ask [livejournal.com profile] gatopreto and his lovely wife where they stay. It is a nice hotel centrally located.

Drop me a line or look for me on IM. We are going to be in NY at the time and staying on the east side. Crashage may be possible.
