1) copy the file to your documents directory 2) open up "terminal" (under utilities). It should open on your home directory.
3) do "cd Documents"
4) then "ftp " 5) log in 6) once you are inside ftp, type "bin " to be on the safe side, then make sure you are on the right folder on the server, "cd" to it if not

In Fugu, it allows you to click and drag multiple files at a time, which is damned convenient. I was given to understand there was some similar application included in OS X that lets you do that, as well. My gripe with this Terminal technique is I still can only move one file at a time, right? I want to move an entire website...
If you're trying to upload things then what deadwinter said but you can also use the 'mput' command instead of the 'put' command, which takes wildcards.
If you're trying to download things then personally I use wget -r but you'll have to install wget (I use DarwinPorts to get things like that).
As to GUI clients... can't help since I hate them.
I stumbled on using a web browser to open ftp:// URLs in OS X by accident (it doesn't have to be Safari, any web browser that tries to open an ftp:// URL will trigger OS X to connect to the FTP server). But I prefer command line. You can install nifty Unix programs like ncftp and wget on OS X, and like all Unixes, it comes with the basic ftp program already. Just type "ftp server.name" at the shell prompt.
You replied to a comment I made over in academicpagans but LJ isn't letting me reply there... I'd be happy to get in contact. But you have to give me some contact info for that to happen...

But the Finder->Go->Connect to Server method is the one I use too.

Using dietrich@livejournal.com should work for me. If not, try kamelathehut at excite dot com.
Thanks!
