Turns out this was the wrong thing to say.
“No, Stan, it’s not that important to me,” she said, her eyes gone hard and flat like river stones. “Why should it be? It’s only been in my family for three generations.” Had her eyes really been stones, she would have thrown them at me.
“I’m sorry! I thought it would be romantic. I wanted to propose to you in a totally unique way.”
“Unique. Yup. That’s definitely the word for you in my grandmother’s wedding dress.”
