Does anyone know if those power cords can be fixed? Or do I have to buy a new one?

I actually have the old style: fat cord going from the outlet to the power box, thin cord from the box to the machine, not the one where the box goes right into the wall.

That's not the old style, it's just a different cable. The mains voltage cable that goes to the wall can be removed and replaced with the folding plug adaptor that goes directly into the wall (they usually supply both with a new machine).

If the cable is breaking at the connector you put into the laptop then you need a new power adaptor. if you still ahve applecare (and if you don't, why not ?) then take it to an applestore and they should give you a new one.
