Or, Dear LJ Genie,

What's your favorite place to register a domain?

Are you just parking a domain or do you need web hosting as well? For the former, I understand that GoDaddy is cheap and popular. (I used to use Gandi.net, but the Euro/dollar exchange rate makes it no longer competitive.)

For the latter - I'm using 1and1.com right now and it generally seems like a good service.

Godaddy is good & cheap but they do try and sell you a bunch of stuff you don't really need as you check out. 1and1 is pretty solid...though I have only used them for hosting, not domain registration.

Do they still charge $32 a year?

After looking at the confirmation email, yes it appears they do. However, they actually make up for it in their customer service (I'm actually not joking, I've had nothing but good experiences with their support department, and when you manage 100+ domains, support becomes pretty important).

I'm still using gandi.net. I've been hesitant to look into cheaper registrars because I've been very happy with them.

I register and do email forwarding through a friend; he has recently implemented a nice "control panel" web interface so I can manage most of it myself. Probably not very helpful for what you want, but I'll be glad to send you his address if you're interested.

I use GANDI, as a few other people have mentioned they do. I found it very easy to set stuff up on the web, and the one time I needed the assistance of an actual human it came promptly (<8hrs) via email. EUR12/year, if I'm not misremembering. (Which makes it like ten million zillion trillion dollars, the way the United States Rouble is going, but I don't care. :-)

What does your user icon mean?

Ha! Yours is great.

Mine was taken on the "Big Island" of Hawaii, in the southeastern region where enormous volcanic activity takes place. Pahoa is the name of a town there; presumably other towns were nearby as well, but they were run over by lava flows and no longer exist. Hence, the blocked-out sign.

It's an icon I use when I need guidance or feel lost. :)

Katima Mulillo is in Namibia. At this spot, all roads lead to Katima.
