Overheard on the loudspeakers in Park St. station today (and oddly enough, for once I could understand what they were saying):

"Attention ladies and gentlemen: For the safety and sanity of your fellow passengers, no smiling is permitted on MBTA platforms or trains at any time. No smiling, please!"

Staring with a wide eyed look of horror is still permitted, as is mumbling into your chest while shifting back and forth from foot to foot, while keeping one hand tucked inside your trench coat.

Goodness; how odd. I've scoured the MBTA website; no sign of any sort of offical statement regarding smiling that I can see. Let's hope this is some kind of disgruntled employee type joke.

The introduction of those airport style loudspeakers and security announcements is a major PITA. I detest airports and anything that reminds me of them. Especially futile but annoying security measures meant to reassure the sheeple.
