[livejournal.com profile] imlad and I need a new mattress, and we're looking at getting a king. What does LJ recommend?

I hear Carl XVI Gustaf is pretty cool. He probably has his own mattress, though.

I *heart'ed* my memory foam. No-name from a big box store is fine.

Some things to note: these are like layer cakes, and typically there's n inches of memory foam on top of m inches of high density regular foam. you want the ratio of n to m to be relatively high. There are also some out there whcih have a layer of soft pillow top type foam on top - avoid these. The way memory foam works is by becoming elastic due to body heat. if you insulate your mattress from your body, it won't work right. I learned this lesson the hard way, unfortunately.

Personally I would like to know what brand of mattress the Sheraton hotels use. Jon and I stayed at a Sheraton in Minneapolis and not only was it comfy, but you couldn't tell the other person had gotten out of bed until you saw them walking around the room.

We find that our king has enough room for the two of us and our cat -- but if we got another cat, we might need a bigger mattress.

What is your preference?

We got out king size latex mattress from foamrubber.com, which is a mom-and-pop store in Allston. They make mattresses for hospitals and burn victims, and you can try out different setups that are the same as 3k+ mattresses. They have memory foam etc.

Well, my mattress is comfy, and there's space for you and [livejournal.com profile] imlad, except when Chickenfinger is hogging the covers again.

(Oh, you want your own? Sorry!)

(No, seriously! She's this tiny little cat, and sometimes Mare and I will wake up squeezed against the wall with the covers half over us, and she's basking in the middle of the bed. I don't know how she does it!)

I got a Simmons pocketed-coil "Hope" plush from Mattress Giant in Everett (the sales lady was quite helpful, and not pushy), then covered it with a Serta 2" memory foam topper from Overstock--much cheaper than buying a memory-foam-topped mattress*.
Also, incredibly comfy.
I don't think I've slept on a comfier bed, and it was under $700 all told.

* Reviews suggest that buying the name-brand, in this case, makes a difference, so spring for the $90 instead of the $60...and possibly get the Cal King (they're all the same price) and cut it down to size, because they apparently can run smallish.

I've been lead to believe that's a feature unique to the pocketed-coil systems (I think several brands have that), where moving the springs on one side really don't affect those around them.
I got one. I lurves it.

I bought my last two mattresses at Jordan's, which made me feel terribly suburban. But they have a good selection, the staff is knowledgeable and helpful, and you can lie on different mattresses to see what you like. The prices are reasonable and they deliver and haul away the old one.

I just got a memory-foam mattress, and I'm very pleased with it. I previously had a latex foam mattress, and I enjoyed it until it started to droop in the middle.

I recommend going to a few places and trying out the options. Tastes vary greatly on this subject.

We just got a memory foam king from Ocean State Job Lot for $450. We couldn't fit our very nice queen up the stairs cause we couldn't get it to bend at all. The memory foam came in a box that was around 8x2x2 so it could make it up the stairs. We have been sleeping on the mattress and have a platform bed we bought on eBay to set up when we have the new floor down in the bedroom.

You are welcome to come over and check it out. I know buying a mattress that you can't test is risky and the 2x3 tester mattress they have in the store is only so good. We lucked out and got something we like. If you know anything about memory foam this is a 10" that has a top layer of 5.3 lbs/ft (same as what the Bob O Pedic). It is also made by a company in MA that gets all their produces in North America so no Chines foam.

If you know anyone who wants a high end queen mattress let us know as we are looking to sell it for around $500. We spent well over $1000 on it 3 years ago and are sad that we can't keep it.
