We stood on the footbridge a while, playing Pooh-sticks. It kept us from having to look each other in the eye. In the stream, lazy duck families float.

I’ve always liked him. His open, searching face; his wry smile. The way the wiry muscles in his arms move. In high school, I went nuts for half a year over the way his hair fell over his left eye. He’s losing his hair, now.

“She’s doing well,” he said, “really well.”

“Yeah?”

“Well…last I heard.”

I still don’t dare look. But his hand, an inch from mine on the railing, twitches.

This one was particular good.

Are these just standalone exercizes, or part of a larger context?

Standalone, mainly. The idea is to write something 100 words long every day for 100 days. What that's become is a combination of stand-alone short-short stories, atmospheric vignettes, and reports on my life. And now and then, several hundred words at a go when I get behind. :)

agreed
