Yes you can.

As a reader, plot and characters definitely. But they don't have to be mutually exclusive. If it's you you want to write about you can stretch the truth of your life, make it malleable. Don't limit yourself to the actual circumstances. Ask yourself if what happened actually expresses the ideas you want to communicate. If yes, fine. If it comes up short, embellish it. Add a subplot to support the ideas your expressing, to support your observations and feelings about your own story. And you can mix and match scenes from different parts of your life experience as well. An experience from a time on vacation can be married with an observation at work. Memories can be moved around a bit - or a lot. Characters can be added to those memories to add drama to the scene and illustrate the truth of it more clearly. Take that out for a spin.
...because I don't know where it's going, it also stalls out. Grrr
Have you ever taken a drive, not knowing where your going? A road trip or something? Did you ever end up somewhere special? Sure you have. You had no expectations, you just explored. The pen is your friend. Cut yourself some slack. Be diligent. It'll come.
